“The Sparkley Clean Funeral Singers” comes alive on Gaston Street for one weekend only, May 17th through 19th at 8 p.m. and May 20th at 4 p.m. at the Artistic Civic Theatre Playhouse.
This wacky, musical comedy, written by Lori Fischer & Don Chaffer, is a four-character musical comedy about a quirky singing duo who lost their recording contact when the lead singing alcoholic sister crashed their tour bus into a pet store, sending many goldfish to an early fish tank heaven.
Back home in a small Tennessee town, Junie Lashley (Portrayed by Heather Burton) inherits the day-to-day operations of the family’s dry cleaning business. She must tend to her forgetful father, Lyle Lashley (Portrayed by David Pasqua), and keep an eye on her sister, Lashley Lee Lashley (Portrayed by Cassie Richardson), who is fresh out of alcohol rehab. With Junie’s dream of being a country singer on hiatus, the town’s pastor, Pastor Phil (Portrayed by Wes Phinney), asks the sisters to write and perform personal send-offs for the dearly departed. Of course, hilarity ensues.
Directed by Rick Martin, with musical direction from Ward Satterfield, “The Sparkley Clean Funeral Singers” follows in the ACT tradition of folksy, tender-hearted musical comedies, like last season’s “Smoke on the Mountain.” “Sparkley” delivers warmth, poignancy and a side-splitting good time with such songs as “Sweet Macaroon,” “Bindy, Take a Seat” and, everyone’s favorite, “Jimmy Boy Brown and His Toy Poodle Puddin’.”
“The Sparkley Clean Funeral Singers” is presented through special agreement with Samuel French and is sponsored by The Sassy Flea Boutique/Sassy Celebrations, Bank of the Ozarks, Nephrology and Hypertension Specialist PC and Barrett Properties.
