The Cherokee called this area The Enchanted Lands for the beauty and serenity of the Appalachian Mountain foothills. Later the ingenuity and entrepreneurship of a 15-year-old girl, Catherine Evans-Whitener, would revolutionize textile production, expanding Dalton to a worldwide industry leader. We’ve come so far, but the people have never lost the connection with this land that has enchanted so many for generations.

The historic freight depot in the heart of Downtown Dalton is the home of the local visitor center. We are here to welcome you to our city and give you “The Local Experience”
Learn about Dalton’s textile history and the beautiful chenille bedspreads that gave us the name Peacock Alley.

The Battle of Resaca, fought May 13–15, 1864 just south of Dalton, was the first major engagement of Union General William T. Sherman’s Atlanta Campaign as his army advanced into Georgia. Sherman and Confederate General Joseph E. Johnston clashed along entrenched lines near the Western & Atlantic Railroad as both sides vied for control of this vital supply route and transportation hub that connected Dalton with the rest of the Confederacy. Although the battle itself was tactically inconclusive, Union forces succeeded in outflanking the Confederates by crossing the Oostanaula River, forcing Johnston to withdraw farther south and setting the stage for continued advances toward Atlanta. The fight at Resaca demonstrated both the intense cost of the campaign—with heavy casualties on both sides—and the strategic importance of railroads and towns like Dalton in the broader conduct of the war. Today the Resaca battlefield and cemetery honor those who fought there and remind us of Northwest Georgia’s critical role in shaping the nation’s Civil War history during America’s first 250 years.
