The Cherokee called this area The Enchanted Lands for the beauty and serenity of the Appalachian Mountain foothills. Later the ingenuity and entrepreneurship of a 15-year-old girl, Catherine Evans-Whitener, would revolutionize textile production, expanding Dalton to a worldwide industry leader. We’ve come so far, but the people have never lost the connection with this land that has enchanted so many for generations.

Local Visitor Center
The historic freight depot in the heart of Downtown Dalton is the home of the local visitor center. We are here to welcome you to our city and give you “The Local Experience”
Learn about Dalton’s textile history and the beautiful chenille bedspreads that gave us the name Peacock Alley.

Dalton Female College was a 19th-century school for young women located at the southeast corner of Thornton Avenue and Waugh Street in Dalton, Georgia, and was built around 1872 as part of the town’s early push for expanded education. Serving students in the decades after the Civil War, the college provided important educational opportunities for women at a time when such institutions were still relatively rare in the region. Photographs from the era show students gathered in front of the building, reflecting the community’s investment in female education and local advancement. Although the college building no longer stands, its history highlights Dalton’s commitment to broader access to schooling and the role that education played in the town’s postwar recovery and growth. As part of Northwest Georgia’s educational heritage, Dalton Female College represents an early chapter in the long tradition of learning that would continue with later institutions in the community.
