The Cherokee called this area The Enchanted Lands for the beauty and serenity of the Appalachian Mountain foothills. Later the ingenuity and entrepreneurship of a 15-year-old girl, Catherine Evans-Whitener, would revolutionize textile production, expanding Dalton to a worldwide industry leader. We’ve come so far, but the people have never lost the connection with this land that has enchanted so many for generations.

Local Visitor Center
The historic freight depot in the heart of Downtown Dalton is the home of the local visitor center. We are here to welcome you to our city and give you “The Local Experience”
Learn about Dalton’s textile history and the beautiful chenille bedspreads that gave us the name Peacock Alley.

The Emory Street School in Dalton was first constructed in 1886 to meet the educational needs of African American children in the community at a time when public schooling was still developing in the post–Civil War South. It became the city’s first formal school for Black students, offering vital classroom instruction at a time when many African American children had limited access to education.
Over the years the school expanded to serve students from kindergarten through 12th grade and became a central institution in Dalton’s Black community. The original structure burned in 1909, but the school was rebuilt in 1924 and continued educating generations until integration in 1968. Later known as City Park Middle School, the building was preserved through local advocacy and eventually transformed into the Emery Center, a heritage and multicultural center celebrating African American history.
